A new season, a new beginning, inviting Charm of Finches’ season-opening concert on November 25th, 7:30 PM, The Music Gallery (197 John Street Toronto). Charm of Finches’ musicians are mavericks in the classical genre – all young, vibrant and electrifying musicians – and the force behind brilliant new arrangements and compositions with a reputation for delivering fresh and energetic concerts. This concert features the Canadian premieres of Saint-Saëns’s Carnival of the Animals arranged by Gudrun Hinze (a great introduction to classical music for our younger audience) and Patxi Pascual’s jazz and beatboxing inspired music, Patillando. The programme also includes the world premiere of “infinite blue heights” written by Canadian – Estonian composer, Riho Esko Maimets as well as a few other newly written arrangements. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear these incredible musicians up close and personal, in the intimate venue of the Music Gallery, with a fantastic, vibrant programme showing how great classical music can be. Come and meet other classical music concert goers and make some new friends at the same time.

    Hello James:

We met at the Tafelmusik concert in Burlington last week. It turns out that I have read many of your interviews before, when there were links from the Tafel Facebook site.

I did re-read your interview with Marshall Pynkoski and I found his most amazing experience telling. My wife and I were there at the Royal Opera House in Versailles that opening night for Armide in 2012. Yes, it was thrilling to have the audience applaud and yell for what seemed an eternity – the performers simply did not know what to do. However, throughout that entire time I did not clap once – I was weeping uncontrollably. The lady sitting beside me thought I was in real distress. Even my wife didn’t know what to do with me. It took a very long time for me to come back to earth that evening – it was thrilling. But not my most thrilling musical experience.

(At the closing night’s performance that time, there truly was an historic moment. During all the wild applause that ensued, Peggy Kriha Dye ran off stage and grabbed Marshall by the arm and literally dragged him on stage. I had never seen him take a bow before.)
